I’m starting a new podcast called Festina Lente Marketing. It will be about the intersection of marketing, technology, culture, and changing demographics.

Let’s get something out of the way. If you are interested in learning shortcuts, or you are looking for top 5 lists, or tips on how technology or social platforms or how artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or augmented reality, or how big data is magically going to solve all your business problems, move on. Because none of those things will actually solve anything.

Marketing is art and science. But marketing professionals can’t help chase the latest shiny tactic. We need a new approach. Festina Lente: Make Haste Slowly.

So what makes me qualified to talk about marketing in the current environment? Why should you listen to me? Well, currently I’m in the process of running my second agency. First one was more of a digital agency, and the second is more of a full-service agency. I have a technology background. I graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in computer engineering, which was half and half software and hardware. I worked at startups building everything from real estate management platforms to payroll and human resources systems. I’ve designed and coded platforms with millions of monthly paying subscribers in the B2B space. And I can code a back propagation neural network…from scratch. So the next time some marketer blabs about some magical technology, ask yourself why they are qualified to do so. I know I’m seriously tooting my horn, but it’s because there are so many people out there who have no clue what they are talking about. Simply saying garbage loudly and repeatedly doesn’t make it true. Especially when it is aggregated and regurgitated by other unqualified folks.

Alright, I’ll get off my soapbox. I’ve done pretty much everything in the marketing world. Come up with concepts, written copy, played creative director. Created brand strategies for new companies, done brand refreshes, built visual identity systems, ran workshops with client senior management to identify and codify a brand’s mission, values, goals, and unique selling proposition. I’ve done SEO work, created, measured effectiveness, optimized Facebook, Instagram, Google ads, and campaigns. Built websites, apps. Mapped customer journeys. Concepted, written, art-directed internal and external presentations given by Fortune 500 execs.

I’ve done it all, seen it all, gotten paid to do it all.
